The NP31's graded soft touch action emulates the graded resistance of an acoustic piano without the added weight of hammers. On the 76-key piano-style keyboard the lower keys are heavy in touch and the higher keys are light, just as on an actual piano, whilst retaining the soft touch of a digital keyboard.

Using advanced wave memory stereo sampling Yamaha have created superb wave data that mirrors the sound and expression of the original instrument by using advanced digital technologies. This gives the NP31 a unique, rich sound using multiple waveforms.
