So, what did they come up with? A 7-ply, 6.85mm shell constructed from 6-ply North American Maple and 1-ply Maple Burl captures the warmth of Ralph's drumming, whilst providing exceptional versatility from the even level of high and mid frequencies. The 8'' depth was chosen to produce a deep, full sound – capable of dominating any mix. This shell features a 45-degree SONIClear bearing edge, allowing the head to sit flush to promote ease of tuning, increased shell resonance, and optimal tonal clarity. View Full DescriptionAbout Ralph Peterson
Ralph Peterson was a Mapex artist since 1992, and was endorsed by Meinl, Vic Firth, and Evans. A professor at Berklee College of Music for 19 years, Ralph Peterson was a drummer, composer, bandleader, producer, educator, and the owner of Onyx Productions Music Label. Ralph joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messenger Big Band at 21 years old in 1983 and was nominated for a Grammy award on Branford Marshalis’ recording Royal Garden Blues.
The first Mapex wood hoop snare drum
The Ralph Peterson Signature Snare Drum is fitted with a monstrous 14-ply maple hoop. This helps deliver a warm and focused sound, while providing exceptional rimshot tones. Air flow venting provides an unmatched tone
The 7-ply maple shell features three vent holes which reduce the overall pressure inside the shell. This slightly reduces the rebound of the sticks, providing a great stick feel – ideal for lighter and faster playing. These vents also provide a pre-eq'd sound, producing a premium sound with extra resonance.

In-line locking b-lugs allow for a wider tuning range. This allows you to tune it high and achieve a great popping sound or tune it low for a deep punch. This further enhances the versatility of this snare drum, making it a great addition for drummers of any style. The cylinder-drive strainer allows you to quickly drop the snares for a quick timbre change. Both the lugs and the strainer feature a transparent, black-plated finish, providing an all-black aesthetic that look great with any kit.
